If you’ve never been to our practice before, here are two easy routes you could take, with the Camanche Public Library as the starting point
- Get on 3rd St heading northeast, then turn left onto 7th Ave. Right before the intersection with 9th St, turn right into our parking lot. We’re across the street from the veterinary clinic, at 814 7th Ave.
- Alternatively, you could head southwest on 3rd St, then turn right onto 13th Ave. Turn right onto Washington Blvd, then left onto 7th Ave, and we’re on the far right corner of that block.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Camanche’s story began in 1836 when Dr. George K. Peck of New York discovered an ideal high bank along the Mississippi River and envisioned a great settlement. After the Black Hawk Purchase of 1832 opened Iowa’s fertile river valley to settlement, thousands of pioneers rushed to the territory. Dr. Peck platted his town with 3,200 lots and named it “Camanche” in honor of a Native American tribe, though he inadvertently misspelled the Comanche name.
The town’s growth was rapid and impressive. By 1840, Camanche served as Clinton County’s first governmental seat. The establishment of ferry service to Albany, Illinois made Camanche a bustling crossing point for emigrants and a thriving frontier trading post. Farm products from across the region were sold in Camanche’s markets or stored for river steamer transport. By 1856, the community boasted 256 buildings, 15 stores, 3 churches, 2 schools, and over 1,200 residents.
In 1857, Camanche achieved two significant milestones: it became one of only 60 original Charter Cities recognized by Iowa’s General Assembly and welcomed its first railroad, the Chicago, Iowa and Nebraska Line. However, tragedy struck in June 1860 when a devastating tornado destroyed most of the town in minutes, claiming 29 lives and ending Camanche’s role as the area’s leading commercial center.
Though Camanche never regained its early commercial prominence, the resilient community endured and eventually experienced significant residential growth. Today, Camanche stands proudly as an extraordinary and active Midwest hometown with a rich heritage.
